These terms govern your use of Explica — the website at explica.app, the browser extension, and everything reachable through them. By creating an account or using Explica you agree to them. If you are agreeing on behalf of a school, department or other organization, you confirm you are authorised to bind it.
Explica explains words and sentences in the language you are learning, and gives feedback on writing. It is a study aid. It is not a translation service, a proofreading service, or a substitute for your own work.
Explanations are generated by an automated language model. They can be wrong. Do not rely on Explica for anything where accuracy matters in itself — legal, medical, financial, safety-critical or professional translation. If your teacher or institution restricts the use of AI tools in assessed work, that restriction is between you and them, and using Explica does not change it.
You need an account, created through Google sign-in. You are responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping access to your Google account secure.
You must be 13 or older to hold an individual account. Where a school or teacher creates or invites accounts for students under 16, the school is responsible for obtaining whatever parental consent its own law requires.
One account is for one person. Sharing an account, or using one account to serve several learners, is not permitted — teacher and school plans exist for that.
Prices are those shown on explica.app at the time you subscribe.
Subscription fees are not refundable, in whole or in part, except as set out in this section or where the law requires otherwise. In particular, we do not give pro-rata refunds for a period you have paid for but stopped using, and we do not refund a renewal you forgot to cancel — though if you contact us promptly after an unintended renewal we will usually sort it out.
Service credit for sustained outage. If Explica is substantially unavailable for three or more consecutive days, and you tell us within 30 days, we will credit one month's fee, and no more.
On a monthly plan that is the fee for the month affected. On a yearly plan it is one twelfth of the yearly fee — a yearly subscription is not credited pro-rata across the year, and an outage does not entitle you to a refund of the remaining term.
Unavailability caused by your own network, your browser, a third party you rely on, or scheduled maintenance we announced in advance does not count. Separate outages are not added together.
This is your sole remedy for downtime.
Trials. Free trials require no card. Nothing is charged unless you choose a paid plan.
Statutory rights. If you are a consumer in the EEA or UK you have a 14-day right to withdraw from a distance contract. Because Explica is digital content supplied immediately, by subscribing and starting to use it you ask us to begin at once and acknowledge that you lose that right once we have. Nothing in these terms removes a right you have under consumer law that cannot be contracted out of.
Do not:
We may suspend or terminate an account that breaches this section. Where it is reasonable to do so we will tell you first.
You keep ownership of what you submit — the text you highlight, the writing you practise, the PDFs you upload.
You grant us a limited licence to process it for the purpose of operating the service: producing explanations, showing your teacher the activity described in the Privacy Policy, and keeping the product working. That licence lasts only as long as we hold the content, and exists for no other purpose.
We do not use your content to train models. We do not sell it. What we collect, who can see it, and how long we keep it is set out in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.
You are responsible for having the right to upload what you upload — a PDF you do not have permission to copy is not made lawful by reading it here.
Where a school or teacher is the customer, that organization is the data controller for its students' data and Explica is the processor, acting on its instructions. The organization is responsible for telling students and parents that it uses Explica, and for obtaining any consent its law requires.
Teachers see the activity described in the Privacy Policy — looked-up words, assignment submissions, reading engagement, integrity signals. They do not see private practice writing, personal PDF reading, or lookups made outside a class.
An administrator can remove a student's access at any time. Deletion requests are handled as described in the Privacy Policy.
We aim to keep Explica running and will not do anything deliberately to degrade it. But it is provided as is, we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we give no uptime guarantee beyond the credit in section 4.
Explica depends on third parties — Google for sign-in, Anthropic for the language model, Stripe for payment, our hosting provider. An outage at one of those can take Explica down with it, and that is outside our control.
We may change, add or remove features. If we withdraw something you are paying for and nothing equivalent replaces it, tell us and we will refund the unused part of your period.
Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
Subject to that:
You may stop using Explica and delete your account at any time.
We may suspend or end your access if you breach these terms, if payment fails and is not resolved, or if we are required to by law. If we end a paid account for a reason other than your breach, we refund the unused part of the period.
On termination your right to use Explica ends. Data is retained and deleted as described in the Privacy Policy.
We may update these terms. The "last updated" date above always reflects the current version, and material changes will be notified by email or in the product at least 30 days before they take effect. Continuing to use Explica after that means you accept them. If you do not, cancel — and if a change materially disadvantages you mid-period, we will refund the unused part.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, United States, and the courts there have exclusive jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer, you may bring proceedings in your own country of residence and the mandatory consumer law of that country still applies to you.
If a provision is unenforceable, the rest stands. Our not enforcing something is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer your rights under these terms; we may transfer ours if the business is sold, and your rights are unaffected.
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any signed order form, are the whole agreement between us.
